- About The Makewane na Kalindula Music Festival
Zambia’s Best Traditional and Contemporary Musicians and Bands in One Place
"Music, just as culture, is one of the biggest natural resources the world has, a powerful universal language that unites, heals," and inspires, as articulated by Moses Sakala. This is evident in historical movements and everyday life globally.
The Sakala Brothers, Levy and Moses, championed Makewane music, named after a rain-making shrine, to breathe new life into the Zambian music industry. This came at a time when Kalindula music, though popular, struggled against international genres. Both Makewane and Kalindula utilize similar sounds and instruments; however, Kalindula emerged from Bemba Land and became Zambia's indigenous genre, while Makewane is the Sakalas' specific interpretation of traditional and contemporary Zambian music.
The Makewane Na Kalindula Music Festival will be Zambia's first major contemporary "indigenous sounds" festival. It will blend traditional and modern music, showcasing local sounds from all 10 provinces and 73 ethnic groups to promote love, unity, peace, and hard work.
